There are two distinct ways to be a Mentor at Toigo – work with a Fellow and make a formalized commitment of 2 years, or work with a Toigo Alumna/us on an ad hoc (informal) basis. In all cases, the Foundation seeks to engage professionals who have at least 15 years industry experience and can provide the long-term strategic guidance for the intended professional career. As well, we seek individuals at a stage in their career who feel comfortable acting in the capacity of advisor to up-and-coming minority professionals.
Serving as a Mentor to a Toigo Fellow has multiple responsibilities, but the crux of the relationship focuses upon:

Supporting and guiding the Fellow/Alumnus in development as an industry professional. This includes helping to identify developmental areas, providing assistance in the search for rewarding employment and assistance with the development of a diverse network of effective career contacts.

Supporting and guiding the Fellow/Alumnus through development as a responsible Toigo Leader. This includes participating in self-development through the Foundation’s leadership program, APEx™ (Advancing Professional Excellence).

Supporting the efforts of the Foundation on a broader level. Beyond the one-on-one interactions with the assigned Fellow or Alumna/us, the Foundation encourages all Mentors to be a part of the general resource pool, and to facilitate the Foundation’s introduction to the Mentor’s firm to cultivate a proactive partnership.
